Ujamaa Empowerment Network

Ujamaa Empowerment Network (Ujamaa) is a community-based non-governmental organization committed to promoting food security, increased household income, and environmental sustainability in Uganda. Ujamaa was founded on a simple but powerful belief: when you empower women, you transform entire communities. Our work focuses on rural and marginalized women, especially those in agriculture, who are the true backbone of local food systems. We help dismantle the barriers that hold them back and create pathways for them to thrive.

To ensure a healthy and productive population, the organization also prioritizes access to good health, emphasizing proper nutrition, addressing menstrual health needs for women and girls, and tackling the devastating challenges related to access to clean water and sanitation facilities in vulnerable communities.

Our Approach

Ujamaa uses a participatory, rights-based, and gender-transformative approach, ensuring that women not only benefit from development but also lead the change. Our work is grounded in strong community engagement, evidence-based programming, and collaborative partnerships with government agencies, civil society, private sector actors, and international donors.

Our mission is rooted in three core pillars:

1. Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture.

We train women in climate-smart agriculture, agroecology, and permaculture. We support them with improved seeds, tools, and farming techniques, and we strengthen women-led cooperatives so they can access better markets. From kitchen gardens to diversified farming, we are improving household nutrition one family at a time.

2. Household Income Generation.

We equip women with entrepreneurial skills, link them to microfinance and village savings groups, and support value addition and small agribusinesses. By improving market access, we help transform small farms into sustainable income sources.

3. Environmental Sustainability.

We integrate conservation into all we do, promoting water harvesting, soil regeneration, agroforestry, and community-led natural resource management. Our goal is to build communities that are productive, resilient, and environmentally responsible.
