Our story

The Story Behind Ujamaa Empowerment Network.

I was born and raised by a single mother who never had the opportunity to access formal education or secure decent employment. Yet, through resilience, sacrifice, and unwavering determination, she raised our family against all odds. Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the daily struggles faced by many women in my community, working tirelessly, often without recognition, resources, or control over the income they generate. These early experiences shaped my values and planted the seed of purpose that would later become Ujamaa Empowerment Network.

Long before Ujamaa was formally established, I dedicated my life after school to supporting vulnerable women and children through skills training, business development, and career guidance. Their stories mirrored my own upbringing. I saw my mother in every woman striving to provide for her family despite limited opportunities. It became clear to me that empowering women was not just a cause; it was my life’s mission.

At Ujamaa, we believe that empowering women means lifting entire households out of poverty, yet across Africa, this remains a significant challenge. Although women contribute over 60% of labor in crop production, nearly 65% have no control over the income they generate. Many lack access to land, training, and financial services, and in some cultures, women are not permitted to own land, even when they purchase it themselves. Evidence shows that if women had equal access to resources as men, farm yields could increase by 30%, helping to combat hunger and strengthen food security for all.

Beyond economic barriers, women also face health challenges that limit their productivity and dignity. In rural communities, over 60% of women miss 3–5 days of productive work each month due to lack of access to proper menstrual hygiene facilities. These same women are the backbone of food production and household stability, yet preventable health challenges continue to hold them back.

Ujamaa Empowerment Network was founded to respond to these realities. Through our work, we have witnessed families uplifted, women restored with dignity, and communities transformed. What began as a personal journey has grown into a shared mission of hope and action. With the support of committed partners and donors, we can continue building a future where women thrive, families prosper, and communities grow stronger together.
